PESHAWAR: The Khyber Medical University (KMU), Peshawar, and Peshawar General Hospital (PGH) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pursue a programme of scientific, technical, and educational collaboration in the fields of medical education and research.

KMU vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ziaul Haq and PGH chief executive officer Prof Dr Asif Malik signed the MoU on behalf of their organisations at a ceremony held here at PGH.

According to the MoU, the two institutions would jointly establish the KP School of Medicine (KPSM) and KP School of Dentistry (KPSD) in near future.

It was stated that the administrative control of these schools would be with the board of governors having equal members from both the institutions. KMU shall be the degree awarding body for both the proposed institutions.

The BoG shall appoint a dean/principal of KPSM and KPSD through an open competition from among the basic medical sciences faculty of KMU and clinical sciences faculty of PGH for the first three-year term and then rotate the same between the faculty of both the varsity and the hospital.

Under the MoU, the dean/principal shall be responsible for both academic and administrative affairs to be run through the vice-principal (academic) and vice-principal (admn), respectively. It said the curriculum committee would be led by the dean and members of faculty.

The MoU elaborated that both the parties should share equal profit, while the expenditure incurred under the development of basic medical sciences faculty should be borne by the KMU and of clinical faculty by PGH.

The administration and support staff should be based at both the varsity and hospital for the smooth running of the colleges.
