ISLAMABAD, Dec 30: The Jamaat-e-Islami has accused the government of doing politics on relief work for the earthquake stricken people of the country.

Speaking at a press conference, Chief Coordinator of Jamaat-e- Islami’s Al-Khidmat Group and former District Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan said the government has divided the nation by raising the controversial issue of Kalabagh dam, and that too at a time when there was a need for complete national unity for rehabilitation of the people hit by the catastrophe.

He said the government had utterly failed to provide relief to the quake survivors and regretted that President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz were making unnecessary statements about Kalabagh dam.

He said the government had banned the sale and purchase of tents when there was a need, and now ban had been placed on the sale of iron sheets which were required in large quantity. He said the Al Khidmat Group has purchased iron sheets worth Rs40 million from Dubai and India.

Naimatullah Khan said the Al Khidmat Group was the biggest NGO with about 100,000 workers engaged in relief work. He said the Nato had nothing to do with relief work. “We know for what purpose they are here,” he remarked.

He asked the government to consult elected representatives to resolve the problems confronting the quake survivors in an efficient manner. He observed that it was difficult for the bureaucracy to handle the situation.
