Gulfraz outlasts Adil

ISLAMABAD, Dec 27: Second seed Asim Shafik on Tuesday pulled out of the 2nd Quaid-i-Azam Islamabad Open tennis championship because of illness, tournament officials said. Asim who was to play Zulfiqar Ahmed in the men’s singles event Tuesday had not been well since appearing in the semifinals of a tournament in Karachi recently.

Aqeel Khan, the top seed meanwhile, was due to arrive from Karachi to play his opening match against Yasin Abbasi on Wednesday.

In the men’s singles competitions taking place at the Islamabad Tennis Complex, it was smooth sailing for the seeded players.

In other categories there were no upsets but third seed Gulfraz Ahmed in the under-17 category had to fight hard to overcome Adil Mujhaid 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

In the under-15s, Jibarnul Haq appeared in trouble against Farhad Ali Raja before scoring a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 victory.

Jibran was 5-2 down in the final set yet recovered and saved two match points to achieve victory.
