KARACHI: A minor girl fell into an open manhole while going to her school in Malir but rescued by passers-by on Tuesday.

A video that went viral on social media shows a man pulling out the victim girl with his upper torso inside the manhole. The accompanying schoolgirls could also be heard wailing at the spot.

Residents said that the girl fell into the uncovered manhole and one of the passers-by immediately shoved into it. They said that timely action saved the life of the girl, otherwise the incident could have been fatal.

They said that several manholes in the vicinity were without cover as they had been stolen by drug addicts. They demanded that the covers must be placed in a manner that it could not be removed so conveniently by the drug addicts.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader in the Sindh Assembly Haleem Adil Sheikh condemned the provincial government for its failure to cover the open manholes in the city.
