KARACHI, Dec 23: City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has issued orders to immediately suspend two assistant district officers and two supervisors of the education department for negligence in duties.

He also directed the department to forthwith initiate inquiry against suspended assistant district officers, Salimullah and Surraiyya Shahab and their two subordinate supervisors.

The city nazim on Thursday night conducted surprise raid at Durrani Govt. Boys Secondary School, My Boys Secondary School and other three schools established in the same premises in North Nazimabad Block-I and on the spot summoned EDO Works and Services Sarfaraz Ali Shah, EDO Abdul Wahab Abbasi and other concerned officials.

Mr Kamal got apprised from his own sources that sewerage water had been accumulated in premises of these schools and pupils and teachers used to walk into labs or classrooms through concrete blocks placed onto the accumulated water. This situation has been prevailing for several years.

Besides, people broke boundary walls of the schools and made doors to their homes, while residents of the surrounding homes spilled their sewerage water in premises of the schools and there are no arrangements for sewer. The sewerage water after accumulating in the schools’ premises is penetrating into the schools’ building.

The city nazim during the raid also contacted concerned TPO and asked him to visit the schools and register FIRs against those who broke the walls and made doors to their homes and spilled sewerage water in the schools’ premises.

He later inspected all buildings of the school and announced that it would be developed as a model school, asking EDO works and services to achieve the goal within two months.

The nazim also directed to plant saplings in the school ground besides provision of sports facilities to the children.

Meanwhile, the nazim on Friday said that the construction of Gharibabad underpass in the Liaquatabad Town would be started soon.

He was addressing UC nazims, naib-nazims and councillors and town councillors during his visit to the town. Town Nazim Hafiz Osama Qadri, Tasneemul Hasan Farooqui, city government and town officials were also present.

Mr Kamal criticizing the former city government leadership said that contaminated water supply claimed several precious lives but they (the former CDGK) did nothing for the underground infrastructure development and restoration which, he described as “criminal negligence”.

He said that the present city government had therefore decided to immediately revamp 30-year-old underground infrastructure and utilities network and each town was being provided Rs50 million for the purpose besides appointing separate consultant for ensuring quality of replacing water supply and sewerage lines.

The nazim told the representatives that 100 fumigation machines were being purchased to ward the city off from mosquitoes and flies and announced that each town would be given eight such machines.

Besides, 32 mechanical sweeping machines are also being purchased and each town will be provided two machines, he added.

The city nazim stressed the need for effective co-ordination among all tiers of the local government from the city nazim to councillor and asked the UC nazims to hold open Kutchehri in every UC to solve citizens’ problems at their doorsteps.

He informed that solid waste management was being privatized and would be operational by Feb 15 next. Under this system garbage-lifting in the city will be conducted during the night hours, he added.

Mr Kamal reiterated that he would not let corruption to grow in the city government.—PPI
