KOTRI BRIDGE

Published October 1, 2022

Kotri bridge is a road-rail bridge linking Kotri and Hyderabad on the Indus River. It is also the link that connects Karachi with the rest of the country and connects two national highways. Due to insufficient nightlights and lack of proper maintenance, the bridge has become dangerous for commuters. Also, the metalled road on both sides of the bridge has developed large potholes which make the commute even worse and more hazardous. The authorities concerned should get the matter sorted out.

REHABILITATION: There is a need to plug the various loopholes in the existing governing mechanism after the recent floods to avoid the recurrence of such a calamity. Government’s response to a calamity is almost always limited to providing short-term relief to the affected families without addressing the structural flaws that trigger these tragedies.

This shallow appraoch should be changed.

SOUL-SEARCHING: While the opposition has been delivering sermons on corruption, dishonesty and slavery, people often wonder if it has forgotten what happened when the party itself was in government not too long ago. When the party was removed from office through a constitutional measure, it started blaming just about everyone. Soul-searching, instead of aggression, threats and anarchy, would be a better option for the opposition.

STREET CRIME: A walk across the road in Karachi is more threatening than climbing K2. People are safe neither outdoors nor at home. The crime rate is out of control, and is increasing by the day. The so-called city of lights has seen adventurous phases, such as targeted killings, bombings, kidnappings and other terrorist activities. Apparently, educated but unemployed youth is often involved in street crimes. It is logical to address the main cause. The state must focus on the young generation.
