SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: Two soldiers were martyred when terrorists opened fire at a check post in the Azam Warsak area of South Waziristan tribal district on Monday, the military said.

During intense firing 29-year-old Naik Rasheed, a resident of Tank district, and 22-year-old soldier Rasool Badshah, who belonged to Lower Dir, fought gallantly before embracing shahadat, said an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement.

According to the ISPR, security personnel initiated a prompt response and effectively engaged the terrorists’ location. As a result, one terrorist was killed and weapons and ammunition were recovered from his possession. The killed terrorist remained actively involved in terrorist activities against security forces and killing of innocent citizens, it added.

Police said the terrorists carried out the attack in the Azam Warsak area near the Afghan border at around 1am on Monday. The attackers fired rockets at the check post. As a result two security personnel were martyred.

Security forces conducted a search operation in the area early in the morning and took three suspects into custody.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

In recent weeks, the region has witnessed a surge in attacks on the security forces. On Saturday, two soldiers were martyred in a blast in North Waziristan tribal district.
