KARACHI: Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon on Thursday directed all DIGs to ensue extraordinary security arrangements in connection with Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Husain being observed on Saturday in coordination with Pakistan Rangers, Sindh and other law enforcers.

The IG also issued instructions for random checking across Sindh particularly in Karachi at each police station and in this connection police stations should strengthen coordination for sharing information for immediate action against criminals.

The provincial police chief said that apart from increasing intelligence gathering, mobile and motorcycle patrolling and picketing at entry and exit points of the city should also be strengthened for protection of Imambargahs, mosques and worshipping places of minorities.

He said that during snap checking, focus should be given to mosques/Imambargahs, shopping centres, markets, industrial and commercial zones, public places and important installations.

Traffic arrangements

Separately, a traffic police spokesperson on Thursday said that a traffic plan had been prepared for Chehlum security on Saturday.

The central procession would be taken out from Nishtar Park, which would pass through its traditional route and would culminate at Husanian Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar.

All roads leading to the procession route would be closed for traffic.

Martin Quarters procession

On Saturday, a procession would be taken out from the Imambargah in Martin Quarters in the morning, which would join the main procession at Nishtar Park that would be taken out at 2pm on M.A. Jinnah Road from Gurumandir, which would be closed for traffic.

Pak-England cricket matches

A meeting was held at SSU headquarters under the chair of DIG Security and Emergency Services Dr Maqsood Ahmed for security of cricket series between Pakistan and England.

The police, army, Rangers and PCB officials attended the meeting.

The participants reviewed the security arrangements.

It was stated in the meeting that SSU commandoes, special branch, Rangers, army and other law enforcement agencies personnel would perform security duties at National Stadium, Karachi airport, roads, hotels, practice grounds and other places while snipers would be deployed at ‘sensitive spots’.
