Several areas of Karachi received light to heavy showers for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicting the latest spell to continue in parts of Sindh till Sep 15.

The Met office recorded maximum rainfall in Korangi i.e. 34.6 millimetre followed by Quaidabad (28.5mm), Saadi Town (28mm), DHA Phase II (24.0mm), Orangi Town (20mm), University Road (20mm), Gulshan-e-Maymar (16.2mm), Saddar (15.0mm) and Jinnah Terminal (10.6mm).

The PMD had earlier in the day predicted chances of scattered rainfall in parts of Karachi.

The Met department said the low-pressure area over the Indian Gujarat had merged with the “well-marked low pressure over central India” which was likely to cause rainfall in parts of Sindh.

“Under its influence, dust-thunderstorm/rain with isolated moderate to heavy falls were likely to continue at a few places in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Badin, Sanghar, Khairpur and Mirpurkhas districts till September 15 with occasional gaps.”

Likewise, similar spells were expected in Hyderabad, Tando Allayar, Matiari, Jamshoro, Tando Muhammad Khan, Sujawal and Thatta districts on Tuesday and Wednesday, it added.

Meanwhile, the rainfall hampered the flow of traffic in some areas of the metropolis. Karachi Traffic Police said that there was a bottleneck at the route leading from Shahrah-e-Faisal to the airport due to water accumulating on the road.

Similarly, traffic jams were reported at major thoroughfares in Malir, Korangi and adjoining areas.

At least three people had died of electrocution as rain coupled with strong winds lashed parts of the metropolis on Monday.

After a gap of around three weeks, the city had on Monday received rain that inundated roads, and caused power outages as well as hours-long traffic jams in different areas.

The fresh spell that continued for more than an hour with frequent breaks left several low-lying areas and main roads inundated. In several areas, residents had complained that power supply got disrupted with the first drop of rain and took hours to restore.
