KARACHI: A 10-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Akhtar Colony on Saturday, police said.

The Mehmoodabad police said that she was found strangled in her home in Kashmir Colony.

East SSP Syed Abdul Rahim Sherazi said that the body of the girl, aged around 10 years, bore marks of torture around the neck.

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and the police asked the family to allow a post-mortem examination.

Later, Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed said initial finding of the post-mortem examination suggested that the 10-year-old girl was brutally raped. “There are multiple abrasions and partial ligature mark on her neck, suggestive of constriction,” she added.

However, she said that visceral samples had been collected and sent for a chemical examination to determine the final cause of the death.

“Swabs have also been collected for DNA profiling and cross-matching,” the police surgeon said.

The SSP-East said: “The family of the victim has raised suspicions about one of the tenants, a 16- or 17-year-old boy.”

They picked up the teenager and investigations were under way, the police said.

‘Extortionists’ held

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the police carried out a raid near Usmania Restaurant in Shah Latif Town and detained two suspects, Mohammed Asim and Noman, for their alleged involvement in demanding extortion.

SIU SSP Arif Aziz said that the held suspects had demanded Rs70 million from the president of All Karachi Fresh Milk Wholesaler Association, Mohammed Jamil, through a phone call.

The suspects were former employees of the dairy farmer. They were arrested on the very first day of the extortion call with the help of technology.
