KURRAM: Residents of central subdivision of Kurram tribal district on Friday organised a peace walk from Parachamkani area to Parachinar, the district headquarters, against resurgence and activities of ‘armed groups’ in their area.

The marchers carrying placards and white banners demanded of the government to take notice of the activities of the gunmen in central Kurram. A banner read: “We want peace in our area.”

The peace march was organised after clashes between a paramilitary force and armed men in central Kurram on Thursday, in which four personnel were injured.

Haji Abdul Ghaffar Khan and other elders of the area led the marchers. They also staged a demonstration in front of the local press club.

Addressing the protesters, Haji Ghaffar expressed concern over the presence of ‘unknown’ armed men in the area, sparking fear among the residents.

“Activities of these armed persons will create unrest in the area, and the government should take prompt action against them,” he demanded.

Elders of Turi-Bangash tribe also addressed the protesters and expressed solidarity with the people of central Kurram.

Elder Inayat Turi said that people of Kurram supported steps for lasting peace in the valley, and urged the government to take stern action against miscreants.

Resentment and anger is on the rise among the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly the merged districts, against the activities of armed groups. Political parties and civil society groups have organised rallies in Dir, Swat, Khyber, Waziristan and other areas demanding action against the gun-totting elements.
