KARACHI: Power failures hit Karachi

Published December 21, 2005

KARACHI, Dec 20: People suffered from power breakdowns in the early hours of Tuesday soon after the first rain of the winter season started. The transmission and distribution system of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) developed faults and most city areas plunged into darkness as it rained.

Sources at the centralised complaint centre of the power utility said they received complaints of power failures from Federal B Area, North Nazimabad, North Karachi, Malir, Shah Faisal Colony, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Karimabad, Burns Road, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, the PECHS and other areas.

However, in some areas, the KESC itself discontinued power supply during the rain as a precautionary measure.

Snapping of wires and tripping of feeders also caused delay in repair work due to which residents of many areas experienced two to three hours of long power failures.

Residents of many localities also complained about low voltage and fluctuation in power supply.

People held the KESC management responsible for low voltage and fluctuation and complained that their valuable electrical appliances had become faulty due to it.

A resident of Gulshan-i-Iqbal area claimed that he had been facing low voltage and fluctuation problem for many days.

Officials admitted that power supply disconnected in various city areas after the rain. However, they maintained that the KESC took immediate action and managed to restore electricity in more than 90 per cent of the affected areas.
