Poor response from clubs

Published October 16, 2001

LAHORE, Oct 15: Only 13 clubs from Lahore District appeared before the Punjab scrutiny committee which started the scrutiny of the bogus hockey clubs for the second time in Lahore at the National Hockey Stadium (NHS) Monday.

The lack of response from the clubs was due to the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) had decided to hold the scrutiny of the clubs and the Under-17 trials for the Pakistan Junior team for Punjab on the same dates and the times.

The players from Lahore showed more interest in Under-17 trials. Besides the strike call given for Monday by political parties was another reason behind the poor appearance of the clubs.

However, sources told Dawn that in the first phase 70 clubs appeared  before the committee out of which only 40 were cleared. Later the scrutiny committee also visited the  practice grounds of the 40 clubs, but only found 15 clubs  practising  at their given venues.
