HYDERABAD, Dec 16: Renowned scholars and scientists from various national and international universities have claimed that biotechnology can help in reduction of poverty, hunger and disease.

They were speaking at the inaugural session of a four-day international symposium on biotechnology organized by the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Sindh, on Thursday.

Vice-Chancellor of the Sindh University Mazharul Haq Siddiqui presided over the inaugural session while Vice-Chancellor of the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Prof Dr A. Q. Rajput was the chief guest.

Dr Rajput said that biotechnology was a study of managing humans’ and animals’ waste to utilize it for betterment of human life.

He said that animal and human wastage was modern day’s big problem but with the help of biotechnology and genetic engineering it could be utilized for development and could be used for production of gas.

He said the world needed energy today and all kinds of energy could be converted into electricity. Dr Rajput said that the society was facing many problems, especially the shortage of food and resources for development.

He said that with the help of biotechnology problems faced by the society could be solved.

Noted scientist Dr M. Y. Khuhawar in his speech said that biotechnology needed more attention from the authorities in Pakistan for its development.
