KARACHI: Lawmaker and television personality Aamir Liaquat Husain passed away at his home in Khudadad Colony on Thursday.

Police told Dawn that according to his domestic staff, he was not feeling well on Wednesday night, but did not go for a medical checkup. His health deteriorated in the morning, when he was taken to the Aga Khan University Hospital, where he was pronounced as dead.

Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed told Dawn that Aamir Liaquat’s body was brought to the Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre’s emergency ward around 3pm, and he was declared dead on arrival. While the body was shifted to the mortuary for completion of medico-legal formalities, the family refused to have an autopsy conducted, she said.

Jamshed Town SP Capt Saddam Husain told Dawn police had sealed Aamir Liaquat’s home for further investigation. He said that a crime scene unit had examined the residence and collected evidence.

The SP said that according to his domestic staff, Aamir Liaquat had complained he was experiencing ‘anxiety’ in the morning. He then remained inside his room for the rest of the day.

Karachi East Zone DIG Muquddus Haider told Dawn there appeared to be no injury marks on his body.

Aamir Liaquat Hussain was married thrice and has two children — a son and daughter — from his first marriage. He was recently in the limelight following his reported separation from his third wife.

Journalist and close friend Faisal Hussain told Dawn that Aamir Liaquat started his career in journalism from daily Urdu Parcham in 1993 as a translator.

Aamir was also a regular on TV, hosting religious shows such as ‘Aalim Online’ on Geo News, before starting the trend of Ramazan transmissions on different TV channels. He joined the PTI in 2018 and was elected MNA from Karachi the same year.
