College lawns flooded with sewage

SAHIWAL: Lawns and two playgrounds at the Government Associate College (GAC) for Women, Farid Town, are littered with sewage water after main sewer lines of disposal pump across the building has got choked.

Reports said sewerage water coming out of the main disposal pump flowed into college owing to the [alleged] lack of maintenance by the metropolitan corporation. As a result around 1,000 college students and 400 female candidates appearing in the [Sahiwal board] class-IX examination are facing a great deal of inconvenience.

Talking to Dawn, college principal Ms Sumera said 30 to 40 per cent of college lawns and two playgrounds are filled with sewage water because of dysfunctional sewer lines.

She said the college administration had duly reported the matter to the respective authorities, including the deputy commissioner office and metropolitan corporation officials, but no repair was done and water could not be sucked out of lawns, inflicting damage on plants and flowers.

She said the situation has turned into a nuisance because of stinking smell as well as there is a likelihood of breeding of mosquitoes. It merits mentioning that the lower staff, who reside on the college premises, are worst hit by the malady.

When contacted, MC official Assad Abbas admitted that college complaint [No. 923] had been pending with the department for a week.

The principal said she had personally called the authorities but nothing was done.

Meanwhile, sources said many a time the MC officials told the college administration that they did not have heavy equipment required to suck water.
