ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi on Wednesday appointed Barrister Jahangir Khan Jadoon as Advocate General Islamabad and denotified Advocate Niazullah Niazi as Advocate General Islamabad.

Niazi was appointed during the previous regime.

Jadoon is affiliated with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Lawyer Forum and during the earlier stint of PML-N government he served as Deputy Attorney General.

He, however, tendered his resignation a few months after assuming the charge of his office to resume legal practice.

Before his appointment as Advocate General, he actively defended journalists in the cases registered under Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) during the PTI regime.

He was a member of the Journalists Defence Committee of the Pakistan Bar Council.

The summary for his appointment was approved by the Federal Cabinet earlier this month and was referred to the President Dr Arif Alvi.

According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Interior, “The President Islamic Republic of Pakistan is pleased to appoint Mr Jahangir Khan Jadoon as Advocate General Islamabad Capital Territory.”

Another notification issued by the same ministry that denotified Advocate Niazi stated that “The President Islamic Republic of Pakistan is pleased to dispense with the service of Mr Niazullah Khan Niazi, Advocate General Islamabad with immediate effect.”

According to the notification, the appointment of Barrister Jadoon has been made under Article 2 and 5 of the President’s Order No. 1 of 2015 that says, “There shall be an Advocate-General forIslamabadCapitalTerritorywho shall be appointed by the President.”

The advocate-general shall hold the office during the pleasure of the president and shall not engage in private practice so long as he holds the office of the Advocate-General.”
