PESHAWAR, Dec 7: The Governor’s Fata Secretariat has directed political authorities in the Khyber Agency to hold an inquiry into smuggling of non-custom duty paid vehicles from Afghanistan via Torkham border check-post, sources said.

They told Dawn that about 50 non-custom duty paid vehicles had been smuggled in connivance with the security officials deployed at the border post.

“The secretariat has directed the political agent to look into the matter and fix responsibility on the officials who are involved in the smuggling,” said an official.

Sources said that the secretariat had received reports that the vehicles had been smuggled after Eidul Fitr. Then, an intelligence agency held an inquiry into the smuggling and recommended to the secretariat to hold a detailed inquiry into it.

An official, requesting anonymity, said that in the beginning the authorities had transferred some of the Khasadars involved in the racket, but, later the matter was hushed up.

An intelligence operator at the Torkham border had reported that some of the officials posted in the area were involved in the smuggling racket.
