PESHAWAR: The Viceroy [Mountbatten] addressed at Landi Kotal a tribal Jirga of Maliks (elders) representing all clans of tribesmen inhabiting the Khyber Pass when he visited the Historic Pass today [April 29]. Old memories were revived when His Excellency drove to the rugged and barren Khyber Pass mountains which he had visited some 25 years back.
At Jamrud, the gate of Khyber Pass, local Khassadars presented a guard of honour. His Excellency drove straight to Charbagh in Khyber hills from where he looked at the distant Afghan hills and had a view of the Indo-Afghan border… . From there His Excellency drove to Landi Kotal camp where about 300 Maliks representing the clans of Afridis, Shinwaris [etc], had assembled to welcome the Viceroy to Khyber and place their demands before him.
[Meanwhile, it was also reported from Peshawar that] A mammoth representative public meeting of the people of the North-West Frontier Province and the Tribal Areas was held in the Cunningham Park yesterday [April 28]. All the leading Maliks of the South and North Waziristan … and other Agencies and over 4,000 Muslim ladies attended the meeting. [It] was witnessed by the Viceroy and Governor from the nearest railway embankment.
