HYDERABAD, Dec 4: Tribu-tes were paid to the late Zarina Baloch, renowned folk singer, radio and TV artiste and political activist at a condolence function held at the Sindh Museum here on Saturday night.

Noted scholars, educationists, politicians and intellectuals said Jiji Zarina was a versatile artiste and she infused a new spirit in people of Sindh through her songs.

Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palijo, PP leaders Makhdoom Jamiluzzaman and Sassui Palijo, Gul Mohammad Umrani, Naz Sehto, University of Sindh vice-chancellor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui, Mehtab Akbar Rashdi, Hashim Laghari, Taj Joyo, Hameed Sindhi, Inam Shaikh, Ameer Bhambhro and Ayaz Latif Palijo spoke on the occasion.

They said Jiji Zarina would always live in hearts of people through her songs.

They said she had remained in the forefront of every struggle for rights of people.

They said Jiji Zarina was a symbol of struggle and her folk music had made her immortal.

Mr Siddiqui announced that a corner would be established in her name in the Institute of Sindhology and a park of the Hyderabad Model School where she had taught for many years would be named after her.

Mr Palijo said one of the greatest misfortunes of Sindh was slavery of its womenfolk.

He said that henceforth no excesses against women would be tolerated and urged women of Sindh to emulate Zarina Baloch to break the shackles of slavery.

Sindh secretary for culture and tourism Mehtab Akbar Rashidi said Jiji Zarina loved her motherland and she had struggled for rights of Sindh throughout her life.

Sindhi Adabi Sangat secretary-general Taj Joyo said Jiji Zarina was the leader of the caravan which had launched a struggle for rights of the province.
