KARACHI: Quake-proof construction

KARACHI, Dec 4: The Association of Consulting Engineers (Pakistan) on Friday organised a meeting of relevant professionals to discuss seismic resistant design and the impact of earthquake on various types of buildings and infrastructures in general with specific reference to Karachi.

The stakeholders attending the meeting hailed from the ACEP, KBCA, Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD), All Pakistan Contractors Associations (APCA), Institution of Engineers Pakistan (IEP), professors from the Sir Syed University, and vice-chancellor of Urdu varsity.

The professionals who attended included structural engineers, geologists, seismologists, building contractors, construction engineers and soil engineers.

The meeting set up a committee to review the earthquake zoning map, micro zoning for Karachi, and to organise seminars on the subject so that public awareness on various aspects of earthquake could created.

The committee will also review the building code for planning, design and construction in accordance with recommendations of the Uniform Building Code (USA) with any amendment applicable to Pakistan, if required.—APP
