Inam stuns Nomi

ISLAMABAD, Dec 1: Peshawar’s Inam Gul sprang a surprise on Thursday beating third seed Nomi Qamar 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the semifinals of the Federal Cup Tennis Championship at the Islamabad Club. Muhammad Shafiq, the No.7 seed also scored an upset win over 4th seed Jalil Khan, younger brother of Aqeel Khan, after being on court for two and a half hours. He carved out a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Aqeel, the top seed defeated Shahzad Khan 6-3, 6-1 while Asim Shafik walloped Mahmood Khan 6-1, 6-1, to also go through.

In Friday’s prefinals, Aqeel will take on Inam while Shafiq will be pitted against Asim in the other semifinal.

Men’s doubles quarterfinals: Asim Shafik-Shahzad Khan b t Rashid Malik-Hameedul Haq 6-2, 7-6 (3), Nomi Qamar-M. Shafiq bt Usman Ijaz-Imran Shaukat 6-1, 6-3, Mahmood Khan-Inam Gul bt Kelby Deese-Imran Ahmed 6-1, 6-1, Aqeel Khan-Jalil Khan bt Wasif Cheema-Munir Ashiq 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Boys under-17 singles quarterfinals: Tanveer Ashiq bt Abid Ali 6- 1, 6-2, Yasir Khan bt Ahmed M. Aslam 6-1, 7-6 (4), Omer Babar bt Usman Ijaz 6-3, 6-3, Khurrum Nazir bt Mubashir Afridi 6-2, 6-2.

Boys under-13 singles semifinals: Syed Zohair Raza bt Kashanul Haq 4-1, 4-1, Gibranul Haq bt Sadanul Haq 5-4 (0), 1-4, 4-2.

Ladies singles quartefinals: Sarah Mahboob bt Saba Aziz 6-0, 6-3, Sara Mansoor bt Natasha Afridi 6-1, 6-1, Mariam Rahim bt Zara Omer 6-0, 6-0, Nadia Rahim bt Anoosha Aslam 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Girls’ under-17 singles first round: Ainab Khan bt Mehak Khokhar 4-2, 4-0.

Girls under-17 singles quarterfinals: Saba Aziz bt Qurat-ul-Ain 6-1, 6-0, Sara Mahboob bt Natasha Afridi 6-1, 6-1, Sara Mansoor bt Nadia Noor 6-0, 6-0.
