HARIPUR: Power generation at Tarbela Dam significantly dropped on Friday evening due to the closure of 15 of the total 17 power units following the decreased inflow of water.

Official sources told Dawn that only two power units were operational producing 220 megawatts against the overall 4,888 megawatts capacity of all units.

They said the issue would badly affect the government’s power load management plan and cause the shortage of agricultural water.

The sources said the dam recorded 5,000 cusecs water outflow against 13,300 cusecs inflow, while the water level was 1445.9 feet.

They said the situation would improve only after the snow melted in the catchment areas of the River Indus.

SECURITY DEMANDED: The Christian community of Ghazi tehsil has demanded security for a local church, supply of natural gas to its housing colony, and allotment of land for its cemetery.

The demands were made during an open kutcheri held here at the Catholic Church in Sanobar Colony of Tarbela Ghazi area here on Friday.

Deputy commissioner Mughees Sanaullah chaired the event.

Priest Azick Farkhal and former member of the district council Zulfiqar Khokhar represented the local Christians and informed the DC about their problems.

They demanded proper security for the church and supply of natural gas and simplification of domicile issuance to Christians. They also complained about a lack of land in Christian cemeteries.

The DC promised the early resolution of their issues and said the administration would take up those related to the provincial authorities.

Officials of the district and tehsil administrations and police attended the open kutcheri.
