PESHAWAR, Nov 24: The Thursday’s session of the NWFP assembly proved to be quite unusual for the current parliamentary year, as the house passed 16 resolutions in one sitting. Most of the resolutions focussed on interests of treasury and opposition members, and throughout the day not a single mover faced any challenge in mustering support for his/her resolution.
Isararullah Gandapur of the PPP-S got three resolutions passed from the house. In the early hours, he brought the issue of suspension of construction work at the Gomal Zam dam.
He argued that since the kidnapping and murder of a Chinese engineer, the construction work at the site had been stopped for the last one year.
The work, Mr Gandapur said, should be resumed, as the issue was very important for the NWFP in general and Dera Ismail Khan in particular.
Later, with the support of the house, he demanded that the provincial government should take up the dam’s issue with the federal government. If the Chinese company was not willing to resume the work with previous monetary conditions, a Turkish company, which had already shown willingness, should be invited to resume the construction, he said.
The resolution was passed.
Israrullah Gandapur got passed two more resolutions.
Through one, he demanded that the federal and provincial governments should allot separate platoons of the Frontier Corps and Frontier Constabulary to Gandapur, Mian Khel, Babra and Astrana tribes of constituency PF-67.
The third resolution was related to carrying out the construction of the road connecting Galooti and Kulachi, under the supervision of the National Highway Authority.
He said the road was the only sources of connecting the NWFP with Balochistan, demanding that Balochistan lawmakers should also pass a resolution of similar nature on priority basis.
Leader of the Opposition Shehzada Gastasip also tabled a resolution demanding that the provincial government should fill the vacant posts of physical instructors in government schools of Abbottabad district.
He said the posts had been lying vacant for quite some time and all those who had completed training should be appointed.
The house, after listening to the arguments of the provincial education minister, passed the resolution.
MMA member Mufti Hussain Ahmad tabled another resolution of almost similar nature. It demanded that the government should provide sports grants to middle schools for setting up playgrounds. The lawmaker did not press it, when provincial education minister Maulana Fazal-i-Ali informed the house about the role of the finance department in the release of such grants.
