KARACHI, Nov 24: There are 6,151 NGOs registered with the social welfare department in Sindh. This was stated by Minister for Social Welfare Qamar Mansoor in reply to a query by Ms Sassui Palejo during question hour in the Sindh Assembly on Thursday.

He informed the house that 992 NGOs were registered with the Sindh government, 2,485 with the City District Government Karachi and 310 with the City District Government Hyderabad (including Tando Allahyar, Matiari and Tando Mohammad Khan). Among others, 85 NGOs have been registered in Dadu/Jamshoro, 72 in Badin, 68 in Thatta, 110 in Mirpurkhas/Umerkot, 48 in Tharparkar, 94 in Sanghar, 250 in Sukkur, 220 in Ghotki, 225 in Khairpur, 145 in Naushehro Feroz, 175 in Nawabshah, 218 in Larkana/Kambar, 136 in Shikarpur and 165 in Jacobabad. He informed the house that 353 NGOs had been registered during the period of ‘One-unit’.

In reply to a question by Jam Mehtab Dahar, the minister said that annual grant was given to only those agencies who would submit applications on prescribed forms in response to newspaper advertisement every year. Due to financial constraints, grants are given to a limited number of NGOs which maintain a proper record and are active.

Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim, in a written reply to a question by the same member, told the house that eight cattle colonies — six in Karachi and two in Hyderabad.

The cattle colonies and the number of animals each of them keep are as under: Landhi: 279,385, Bilal Colony: 19,700, Surjani Town: 17,903, Al-Momin Society: 15,575, Nagori Colony 12,789, Baldia Town 96,104, Hala Naka (Hyderabad): 13,572, and Tando Mohammad Khan Road (Hyderabad): 5,490.—APP
