KARACHI: The Sindh government has notified the town system in Karachi dividing the existing seven district municipal corporations into 26 towns with 233 union committees, it emerged on Friday.

The DMCs — Korangi, Malir, Keamari, East, West, South and Central — have been replaced by Town Municipal Corporations (TMCs) after the enactment of the Sindh Local Government Act, 2021.

According to a notification published in the Sindh government gazette, four town were made with as many TMCs in district Korangi — Model Colony Town, Shah Faisal Town, Landhi Town and Korangi Town. The four towns comprised 37 union committees.

Some parts of Shah Faisal Colony have been included in Model Colony Town, while some parts of Landhi and Korangi sub-divisions in Shah Faisal Colony Town.

The district South has two towns — Saddar Town and Lyari Town — and 26 UCs.

Districts Central, East get maximum five towns each

The Saddar Town comprises Saddar, Arambagh, Civil Lines sub-divisions excluding the areas falling under the jurisdictions of Cantonment Board Clifton and Cantonment Board Karachi.

In West, three towns — Orangi Town, Mominabad Town, Manghopir Town — were carved out with 26 UCs.

In district Malir, three towns — Gadap Town, Malik Town and Ibrahim Hyderi Town — with 30 UCs were created. The Gadap Town comprises subdivision Gadap and Sha Mureed and parts of Bin Qasim and Ibrahim Hyderi subdivision. Malik Town comprises Airport and Murad Memon subdivisions and parts of Ibrahim Hyderi.

Five towns were created in district Central — New Karachi Town, North Nazimabad Town, Gulberg Town, Liaquatabad Town and Nazimabad Town — with 45 UCs.

New Karachi Town comprises area of entire New Karachi and North Karachi while North Nazimabad Town comprises of entire UC 14 to UC 25, Shadman, North Nazimabad and Hyderi sub-divisions.

Keamari district has been divided into three towns — Mauripur Town, Mario Mirbahar Town and Baldia Town. Area of Keamari and Mauripur subdivisions excluding Manora Cantonment Board falls in Mauripur Town, while Mario Mirbahar Town comprises area of jurisdiction falling in SITE sub-division including one union committee from Baldia Town (Rashedabad).

In district East, five towns — Sohrab Goth Town, Safoora Town, Gulshan Town, Jinnah Town and Chanesar Town — with 43 UCs. The Sohrab Goth Town has the area of jurisdiction in Gulzar-i-Hijri sub-division. Safora Town has areas including part of Gulzar Hijri UCs 29 and 30, and UC-27 of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, and excluding Faisal Cantonment Board.

The Gulshan Town comprises areas of jurisdictions of Gulshan-i-Iqbal union committees No. 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28 and subdivision Jamshed Quarter UC No. 20.

The Jinnah Town stretches over areas of jurisdiction Ferozabad subdivision UC Nos. 9, 10, 11, 12 and sub-division Jamshed Quarters UCs 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19.

Chanesar Town comprises areas of jurisdiction of Ferozabad subdivision in UCs No 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

The Sindh government also divided other parts of the province on the same lines in compliance with the SLGA-2021.
