Bharatiya Janata Party MP Kirodi Lal Meena will introduce 'The Uniform Civil Code in India Bill, 2020' in India's Rajya Sabha on Friday, seeking constitution of the National Inspection and Investigation Committee for preparation of 'Uniform Civil Code' and its implementation throughout India, a report in the Deccan Herald citing the IANS news agency said.

Earlier on Wednesday, BJP member Nishikant Dubey had urged New Delhi to bring a law soon to implement a Uniform Civil Code in India.

Addressing the Lok Sabha, Dubey said the Allahabad High Court had last month asked the Centre to consider setting up a panel for implementing the mandate of Article 44 of the Constitution, which speaks about a Uniform Civil Code for the citizens throughout the territory of India.

"Even after 75 years of Independence, we have not been able to bring in a Uniform Civil Code. I urge the government to soon bring a law to implement a Uniform Civil Code," Dubey said.

The AHC had called upon New Delhi to look into implementing the mandate of Article 44 of the Indian Constitution.

“The UCC is a necessity and mandatorily required today. It cannot be made ‘purely voluntary’ as was observed by Dr BR Ambedkar 75 years back, in view of the apprehension and fear expressed by the members of the minority community,” news portal livelaw had quoted the court as saying.

The AHC made this observation while hearing a set of 17 petitions moved by interfaith couples, who had approached it, seeking registration of their marriages and protection from private respondents.

Justice Suneet Kumar of the AHC said it was the need of the hour that Parliament came up with a “single family code” to protect interfaith couples from being “hounded as criminals”.
