PESHAWAR, Nov 14: NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani has approved compensation for the damaged buildings of the subordinate judiciary to enable the courts to start functioning again. Talking to Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Tariq Pervez Khan at the Frontier House on Monday, he said that judicial buildings in the quake-battered areas would be reconstructed to provide speedy justice to the people.

Justice Tariq Pervez informed the chief minister about the damage caused to residential buildings of judges and subordinate courts.

“Temporary arrangements have been made for the courts in affected areas. Circuit Bench of the Peshawar High Court has been set up in the Judicial Lodges which are also weak,” he said.

Justice Pervez added that most of the subordinate courts had been set up in the erstwhile GTS terminals and bus stations and that the October 8 quake affected scores of officials of the judiciary, with one civil judge losing his life.

The chief minister expressed his grief over the death of the civil judge and damages caused to the judicial infrastructure and assured that the Pakistan army, police force, volunteers plus the provincial and federal governments were contributing to the relief effort in the stricken areas.

He also issued directives for placing buildings made of steel and fibre glass for the judiciary-related activities in the quake zone.

“These buildings are quake-resistant and have 30 years warranty,” he said.

He directed electrification of Abbottabad’s erstwhile bus station building to house the judiciary building and urged close coordination with experts of the University of Engineering & Technology for the purpose.

The chief minister assured to take necessary steps for the construction of a new building for the Circuit Bench.

DIST GOVT PROPERTIES: The chief minister has directed to evolve a plan for the development of district government properties throughout the province.

The district government and the Bank of Khyber should make agreements on a partnership basis through Islamic investment for the development of government properties in all the districts and that the return should be distributed equally, he added.

The chief minister directed the secretary of local government to convene meetings at divisional levels involving district and tehsil nazims, DCOs and TMAs and get proposal from them for development of district property on commercial lines that will enable district governments to stand on their legs and generate resources for meeting this expenditure.

The start should be made from district Bannu as a model plan and then be extended to other districts.

It must be a uniform policy and should be for all the districts of the province. The system should be evolved and implemented in a transparent manner, he directed.
