KARACHI: Armed robbers shot dead a professor of Sindh University (SU) over resistance in Gulshan-i-Maymar on Friday evening, police said.

SITE-Superhighway police said Dr Zainul Abideen Sodhar, 50, was travelling in a car when armed pillion riders apparently tried to rob him. When the professor put up resistance, the robbers fired at him and fled. He suffered critical bullet wounds and was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

The police said the incident occurred at Yusuf Sahib Khan Goth at around 9pm.

He was Hafiz-i-Quran and also director of the Institute of Languages at SU. He had remained principal of different colleges in Karachi and Sanghar before joining SU in 2012.

The victim originally hailed from Mehar in Dadu.

SU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammed Siddiq Kalhoro condemned the murder of the faculty member. He offered condolence with the family and demanded immediate arrest of the killers, said the spokesperson.
