CHAGAI: Agriculture experts have advised growers to conserve maximum water by growing and planting those crops and trees which need minimum water. They also called for adopting the trickle irrigation system.

A seminar in this regard was conducted by Islamic Relief (IR), Balochistan, with the collaboration of Agriculture Extension Department in Dalbandin on Monday. The seminar was attended by growers and officials of public and private sector organisations.

Speaking on the occasion, Agriculture Research Council, Balochistan, Director General Abdul Hannan, Deputy Director Abdullah Baloch and Scientific Officer Javed Ahmed said that 70 to 80 per cent water is wasted due to those plants and crops which consume more water with low benefits. They called for avoiding mismanagement of water by growers. They stressed the need for creating awareness about efficient use of water and called for enactment of a water act followed by a proper policy in this regard.

According to them, if this matter is not taken serious then the country could face an acute water shortage in the future.

The speakers were of the opinion that growers must be consulted before construction of dams.

IR Balochistan’s area manager Essa Tahir Sanjrani, Agriculture Extension Department, Chagai, Deputy Director Zahoor Ahmed Shah and some experts also shared their experiences with participants of the seminar.
