KARACHI, Nov 13: MQM chief Altaf Hussain on Saturday appealed to people to donate more foodstuff for earthquake victims. In a statement, he said that the victims of the quake in the NWFP and Azad Kashmir were facing food shortage and thousands of lives were threatened.

He advised the party leaders to collect for food items to help the victims.

Meanwhile the MQM coordination committee accused the Jamaat-i-Islami activists of allegedly harassing and threatening its volunteers deputed at the Khidmat-i-Khalq camps in Lahore for collecting relief for the earthquake victims.

Strongly slamming the alleged incident, it said that the MQM had set up relief camps at three points in Lahore but on Saturday armed terrorists of the Jamat-i-Islami allegedly attacked these camps and threatened the volunteers of dire consequences if they did not stop their relief work.

It pointed out that prior to the Lahore incident, the Jamaat men had also “attacked” MQM relief camps in Muzaffarabad and brutalised party workers and volunteers. Following this incident, MQM had to suspend its activity for a while in the quake-hit area.

It maintained that neither Jamaat-i-Islami was interested in helping the victims and other needy, nor was it allowing others to do so.

In fact, the JI was allegedly creating hurdles and appealed to the President and the Prime Minister to take notice of the incident.
