Lahore mayor assumes charge of office

LAHORE: Retired Col Mubashir Javed of the PML-N assumed the charge of mayor office here on Saturday and the Punjab government formally issued a notification to implement the orders of the Supreme Court for the restoration of the local government.

All chairmen and vice chairmen of union councils belonging to various political parties also accompanied the mayor on the occasion.

Mr Javed directed the staff concerned of all the union councils to fully cooperate with chairmen and vice chairmen to resolve public issues. He also issued orders to the officers of Metropolitan Corporation Lahore (MCL) to get permission from the authorities prior to attending meetings of any other department. He warned that action would be taken under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability (PEEDA) Act against the employees who would not get permission before attending meetings of other departments.

Meanwhile, the local government issued orders of reviving the municipal corporations and district councils in the province under the Punjab Local Government Act 2013.

LG Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal also issued orders for changing chief officer metropolitan corporation into chief officer municipal corporation and also changed chief officer tehsil council and chief officer district council. He issued appointment orders of 35 district MCL officers of the province while Lahore city would remain a metropolitan corporation under the Punjab Local Government Act 2013. He gave orders for the transfer and posting of several employees in local government in the province.
