MANSEHRA: The Lower Kohistan police have arrested dozens of growers during an operation launched to destroy the hemp (bhang) crop grown across the district.

“We have started destroying the cannabis grown in parts of the district and arrested its growers under the Narcotics Control Act,” Zulfiqar Khan Jadoon, the district police officer, told reporters on Sunday.

Mr Jadoon, who is personally leading the operation in mountainous parts of the district, said narcotics peddlers were growing hemp and targeting youngsters.

“We have so far carried out operation in the mountainous Mundraza area and its adjoining hamlets, destroying hemp grown there over a large tract of land,” he said.

The DPO said personnel of the Elite Force were also part of the operation.

He said before starting the operation, ulema and elders of the district were consulted for their consent, and they extended full support.
