DERA GHAZI KHAN, Nov 11: The district coordination officer is alleged to have issued a large number of licences for storage of petroleum products in small outlets during the days he served as the district caretaker.
Information gleaned by Dawn reveals that at least 300 mini-petrol pumps have been established during the caretaker district administration, headed by the DCO.
These pumps, according to an expert, are highly dangerous for the residents of localities nearby. He said such petrol pumps could not be established in small outlets because of their potential threat.
Also worth mentioning is the fact that some 35 mini-petrol pumps are being run in the city’s congested areas, posing a serious threat to the lives of dwellers.
Some petrol pump owners, who requested anonymity, said the DCO office issued licences for mini-petrol pumps after getting illegal gratification.
When contacted, District Officer (Civil Defence) Shakaib Khan said only the DCO office could issue licences for storage of POL products. He, however, said he had challaned and sealed 15 such stations in the Dera Ghazi Khan city precinct.
He said cases against their owners were being prepared by the office and would be sent to the police.
CONFERENCE: A moot under the auspices of Sindhi organizations will be held on Nov 27 at the left bank of the Indus river near Taunsa Barrage.
The people affected by the Greater Thal Canal, Muzaffargarh Canal, Kacchi Canal and Chashma right bank canal will participate in the conference to chalk out a plan to protect the ecology, wetlands and sanctuaries for vultures and migratory birds.
