PESHAWAR, Nov 9: A senior Taliban commander and former governor of Afghanistan’s three northern provinces and his aide were killed on late Tuesday night in the outskirts of Peshawar, sources told Dawn on Wednesday.

Abdul Manan Hanafi and Maulvi Mohammad Akbar were killed in front of the Badhber High School on Kohat Road at 1.30am when they were going to the semi-autonomous tribal region of Dara Adamkhel from Peshawar, the sources said.

Hanafi was an important commander of the Taliban militia, the sources added. He served as governor of Badghis, Samangan and Sara-i-Pul provinces during the Taliban rule.

A senior official said that Hanafi was an arms dealer in Chaman. Hanafi was going to Dara Adamkhel for buying arms, said SSP (operation) Saeed Khan Wazir.
