FORCE WON’T WORK

FORCE WON’T WORK: The simple fact about Afghanistan is that the Taliban are the victors, and one should not be surprised by their actions. It would be a folly to think that a Western democracy will emerge from the ruins, and that, too, in a matter of days. I am no fan of the Taliban, but I am certain that media criticism and threats from Western capitals will not be even a cause for concern for the Taliban. They will do what is expected of a victorious army at its peak. This time round, confrontation and force will not achieve better results.

NEW DELHI TACTICS: This is with reference to the report ‘New Delhi to probe Geelani’s family under anti-terror law’ (Sept 6). Instead of offering sympathies and leaving the bereaved to mourn their loss, the family is being harassed by the Indian forces under orders from the Indian government in New Delhi. Such repressive moves cannot take away the love that the Kashmiris have for Pakistan.

ELECTRONIC VOTING: While the government is keen on using electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the next general elections, I do wonder why there is no biometric verification of the voter involved in the proposed process. Even the presiding officer is not bound to verify CNIC genuineness. A proxy voter can only be checked through biometric verification. Besides, there is no mention of the system under which the Pakistanis living abroad will vote, if allowed.

WAR CRIMES: The West, especially the United States, commemorated the 20th anniversary of 9/11 attacks recently, which was also a reminder for Muslim countries to recall the Western war crimes in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Palestine, Yemen, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Nigeria and many more, which have all come under attack one way or the other.
