KARACHI: A 23-year-old married woman suffered burn wounds when her husband allegedly attacked her in the Qayyumabad area on Thursday.

Defence SHO Azam Rajpar said that Sajid Riaz threw acid on his wife, Saima Husain, inside the latter’s home located on Street-25.

She suffered wounds on her face and body and was taken to the burns centre of Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital for treatment.

The suspect escaped.

The officer said that it was a watta satta marriage.

CTD’s antiterrorism financing unit revamped

The police said the suspect was stated to be a drug addict. After developing differences with her husband, the woman had shifted to her parents’ residence. On Wednesday night, the suspect visited her in-laws’ home apparently for reconciling the differences. A quarrel erupted between the couple after which the suspect threw acid on her body and fled.

The injured woman’s brother, Amir, told the media that the suspect had bought acid from a nearby shop. The police said the acid attack victim was not in a position to record her statement.

Woman self-immolates

A married woman committed suicide by setting herself on fire on the outskirts of the city late on Wednesday night, Shah Latif Town police said.

They added that Khalida Nisar, 35, immolated herself in the Jogi Mor area.

Quoting relatives of the woman, the police said that she attempted suicide after a quarrel with her husband, Nisar, over some domestic issues. She took out petrol from a rickshaw and set herself on fire. She suffered critical burns and died while being taken to the burns centre.

Anti-terrorism financing unit

The Counter-Terrorism Department’s Anti-Terrorism Financing Unit was revamped on Thursday at the ATFU centre located at Shaheed Chaudhry Aslam Complex near the Garden police headquarters.

CTD-DIG Omar Shahid Hamid on this occasion said that so far 147 cases related to providing financial assistance to terrorists had been registered at the unit. Sindh Minister for Information Technology Taimur Talpur said that this unit would help prevent financial assistance to terrorists. The minister said policemen had rendered tremendous sacrifices while fighting against organised crime.

The unit was inaugurated by UNDP representative in Pakistan Dr Jeremy Milsom. It was being equipped with modern equipment with the help of the UN and European Union.

Talking to the media, the CTD chief said that the unit had already been working but now it had been upgraded on modern lines. He said money laundering and hawala/hundi cases would be dealt with by the Federal Investigation Agency while the cases pertaining to terror financing would be taken up by the ATFU.
