USA, Italy clash for top prize

KARACHI, Nov 3: The final of the Bermuda Bowl, world championship of bridge will be played between two old rivals of the Italy and USA. Both the teams have entered in the final after defeating their rivals at Estroli, Portugal, said a press release of Karachi Bridge Association on Thursday.

Italy right from the start of semifinal looked quite happy when Sweden conceded 43 lmp lead in the very first half. Sweden made amends in the second set 45-20, but that was all over till the segment when Italy built up a convenient lead 205 as against 131. Sweden conceded last segment as it was difficult to make up in the last set.

However, USA did not allow their countrymen and fought till the last card dropped. When the play resumed for the last three sets of the semis, USA I the reigning champion, scored 126 lmps against 81 lmps. In the fourth set, USA put up some fight and finished 16-26, then they finished 18-35made last minute dash 51-30, that was the only segment for rejoicing.—Agencies
