BAHAWALPUR: More than 12,000 litres of petrol spilled on road near Uch Sharif interchange about 80 kilometres away from the city when a bus hit an oil tanker on Thursday.

The oil tanker was on its way to Kharian from Karachi with 48,000 litres of petrol when the accident took place. Teams of the Rescue 1122, the National Highway and Motorway Police (NH& MP), police and civil defence cordoned off a portion of the road and suspended the traffic.

The traffic was resumed after many hours when the rescuers shifted the oil to another tanker. In another road accident, a motorcyclist was run over and killed by a speeding trailer at Hasilpur.

PHA: The Parks and Horticultural Authority (PHA), Bahawalpur has extended invitation to the local and multinational companies, private and commercial institutions and individuals to contribute to the city beautification campaign.

PHA chairperson Ms Shehla Ehsan told Dawn that as the Authority was running short of funds, it had decided that local and multinational companies would be requested to help adorn parks, roads, greenbelts and interchanges. The PHA would honour the companies or the individuals by displaying their names at particular places, she said.

Those interested in the initiative would have to sign an agreement with the PHA, she said. She said suggestions would be invited for installation of a waterfall at a city intersection. She said the PHA intended to decorate the city intersections with replicas and statues of known personalities.

LAPTOPS: The British Council at a ceremony held at Baghdadul Jadid campus auditorium of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB) on Thursday distributed laptops among 56 girl students under its “Scots Scholarships Program.”

The scholarships were given away by IUB Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Athar Mehboob and British Council representative Sara Aslam.
