LONDON, Nov 3: The editor of Britain’s biggest-selling daily newspaper, The Sun, has been arrested for allegedly assaulting her husband, an actor famous for his tough guy role in a long-running soap opera.

Rebekah Wade, editor of the tabloid title since 2003, married actor Ross Kemp in Las Vegas the year before.

“At approximately 4am officers attended an address in south London in relation to an alleged assault,” a spokeswoman for the city’s Metropolitan Police said.

“A woman was arrested for alleged assault and is now in custody at a south London police station.”

A spokesman for The Sun said the tabloid had no comment.

Rebekah Wade is a highly influential figure as editor of the mass-market daily and has been invited to Tony Blair’s Downing Street offices on several occasions.

Last month Ross Kemp, 41, returned to ‘EastEnders’, the BBC’s flagship soap opera which chronicles the lives of a series of working class London families, after a six-year break, handing the programme a welcome surge in viewer figures.

The burly actor played hardman Grant Mitchell, one of the series’ most popular characters, for 10 years before quitting in 1999. —AFP
