KARACHI, Nov 1: The Sindh Minister for Education and Literacy, Dr Hamida Khuhro, on Tuesday announced that Rs50 million had been released for the establishment of the “Reform Support Unit” (RSU) in the education department so as to improve the education system of the province.

Talking to media at her office, the minister disclosed that the RSU would comprise of three wings.

Giving the details of the present SEMIS wing, she said, it would be merged into it while the other wings would be called the policy wing and the monitoring and evaluation wing.

Dr Khuhro said that the SEMIS wing would collect the accurate data along with developing database of the existing facilities and the requirements of the entire system.

“This wing also develops and runs the internet and satellite-based connectivity of all the educational institutions with the district headquarters, regional base and the provincial head office being established at Karachi,” she said.

Dr Khuhro further told that the policy wing would prepare short, mid and long-term plans and ensure their implementation. The wings would also coordinate with the donor agencies/funding people in order to finance these projects.

She said that the main component of the RSU was its monitoring and evaluation wing, which would work as a watch dog to the entire system.

The minister said that through the RSU; the entire infrastructure and manpower would be available on computer/ internet for every one and the progress of every teacher and student could easily be assessed on a daily basis.

She expressed her gratitude to the Sindh chief minister and Senior Minister Syed Sardar Ahmed for their all out support extended to the education department for the establishment of this institute.

Dr Khuhro said that through this unit we would be able to mechanize all the chapters of the system and hoped that the institute would prove as a milestone for quality education.

To a question, she said the head of RSU would be a grade-20 officer with the designation of chief programme manager, who would be posted from amongst the senior and efficient officers of the department.

Dr Khuhro said that grade-19 officers to be called by the programme managers would lead to every wing besides grade-18 deputy programme managers would be posted at all the five regional headquarters and grade-17 monitoring officers would be posted at each of the districts.

She announced that all the programme managers and other lower cadre officers would be hired from the market and would be offered attractive salary packages.—PPI
