POLICE AND DRUGS: This refers to the report ‘Six policemen arrested on charges of selling seized drugs in Karachi’ (July 19). This shows the pathetic state of affairs prevailing in Sindh police force which should actually be eliminating drugs from society. Greed and lust for money have no limits. The rampant corruption within law-enforcement agencies has adversely impacted the entire system. Although people have raised their concerns over it from time to time, their efforts cannot bear fruit against the influential elite. The authorities concerned should take serious action in this regard.

COMMENDABLE RULE: The Sindh government has done a remarkable job by amending Police Rules to ensure that “no arrest shall be made before investigation of FIR”. Every individual in society has the right to be treated with dignity, including those who are under arrest or are kept in police custody. This amendment is a step in the right direction and will hopefully restore public’s trust.

ELECTRONIC SYSTEM: While the introduction of an electronic system for the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) is laudable, the authorities concerned should also work towards putting in place a similar structure for all public offices. Unfortunately, one must go through a lengthy process of submitting hard copies of documents in public offices. This increases the time spent on paperwork, and also leads to corrupt practices.

RAISE IN PENSION: The plight of the pensioners who retired after serving their organisations for long is pathetic. They are the downtrodden lot who spent a lifetime in the service of various government departments, including industrial units. Efforts towards eradicating various bureaucratic hurdles in this regard will reduce the hardships being faced by the pensioners in these difficult times.
