Rawalpindi: The Pakistan Government is willing to have a discussion in the Security Council on the threat to peace in the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent which was said to have formed the basis of UN Secretary-General U Thant’s recent confidential memorandum to the Security Council President.

Pakistan Ambassador in the UN, Mr Agha Shahi, is learnt to have conveyed to the UN Secretary-General that Pakistan would welcome with a sincere desire to avert the existing threat to peace in the region because she believes that the war hysteria being built up by the Indians would help no one — not even the Indians.

… On the other hand, the Indian Government’s efforts to drag Pakistan’s internal situation for a discussion in the Security Council appear to have boomeranged because the majority of the Security Council members are said to have declined to be associated with the Indian line, while expressing their concern about the threat to peace…

[Meanwhile, as reported by agencies in Peshawar,] The death toll in the disastrous Hindukush landslide in Afghanistan may well be over 4,000 … [M]ore than 1,000 houses in the village lying near the mountain of Taka Khana had been washed away completely while heavy loss of cattle heads and crops was also imminent.
