KHYBER: The security forces foiled an attempt to smuggle explosives by arresting an Afghan national at the Bhagiyari checkpost in Jamrud here on Tuesday.

Officials said the Chitral Scouts personnel stopped a car during routine checking, and recovered explosives from it. They said explosives were concealed in lunch boxes. The arrested Afghan national was identified as Hamzullah.

The main road leading to the Torkham border remained closed for some time as the security forces detonated the seized explosives in a nearby dry stream bed.

Meanwhile, Khyber district police officer Wasim Riaz distributed compensation cheques among the heirs of the martyred Khasadar and Levies personnel at the Shah Kas Police Training Centre in Jamrud on Tuesday.

Cheques amounting to Rs7.8 million were given away to the siblings of the martyred personnel, according to a statement.
