KARACHI, Oct 25: The admissions of students to MPhil or PhD programmes at the University of Karachi will now be subjected to preparation and submission of research proposals by students and finally their interviews.

The interview committee will send its recommendations along with the synopsis to the Board of Advanced Studies and Research (BASR) which will discuss and give its final approval regarding the admission.

This was decided at a joint meeting of the National Quality Assurance Committee of the HEC with senior varsity officials. The meeting was presided over by KU vice-chancellor.

The meeting decided that the supervisors of MPhil/PhD students will send six monthly progress reports to BASR for evaluating the research work.

As far as the examination of thesis is concerned, the supervisor, after submission of thesis, will send 10 names of examiners from developed countries to BASR. Two examiners will be picked randomly by BASR and the thesis would then be sent to them for evaluation while a local examiner will also be appointed to conduct the viva voce examination.

The meeting decided and agreed that if reports of foreign examiners were found satisfactory and they recommended the award of degree, the local examiner would be asked to conduct viva examination.

The viva report would then be sent to BASR and a degree would be awarded in case of a satisfactory report, the meeting added.—PPI
