THE MISSING SENSE: Pakistan has seen some of the best mega projects in recent times, such as motorways and bus rapid transit (BRT) systems, but the lack of civic sense might lead to their failure soon.
I use BRT Peshawar and have observed the reckless behaviour of people while using public facilities. People enter and exit the platforms in a hurry while pushing each other aside and throwing the trash around. A nation cannot progress until it changes its behaviour, and values public services. It is high time people used facilities responsibly.

▶ ELITE POWER: As the prime minister has reiterated his commitment to bringing the elite and the powerful under the rule of law (May 7), he needs to reduce the unnecessary perks, privileges and facilities enjoyed by them, including a nominal wealth tax. A strong check and balance system must be in place to promote austerity at all levels of the government. Surely, this will improve public welfare and will help him create a more equitable Pakistan.

▶ CRIME SITUATION: The rising rate
of crimes in Sindh, particularly in Karachi, is worrisome. The metropolis is fast becoming ungovernable. Crumbling infrastructure, non-delivery of essential services and flight of investment owing to poor governance and rampant corruption have eroded public confidence in the administration. Bold decisions are required to restore the confidence of the people.

▶ BLESSINGS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY: In these times of serious challenges for the mankind, biotechnology holds great importance. It deals with qualitative products to help provide disease-free materials in bulk with minimal space and time constraints. We should use biotechnology in agriculture, marine sciences, medical sciences for better results.
