ROAD SAFETY WEEK: Local Rescue 1122 staff and traffic police on Wednesday jointly launched activities to commemorate the Global Road Safety Week in the city to create awareness about traffic rules and safe driving.

District Emergency Officer (DEO) Dr Khalid Abdulla said in Pakistan 83 percent of the road accidents involved motorcyclists as they mostly run bikes above 50km per hour speed without wearing helmet.

He said the number of such accidents could be brought down by more than 60pc if the motorcyclists wore helmets, use side mirrors and keep their speed around 50km per hour. He said underage driving was another major factor in motorcycle accidents.

During the road safety week, the Rescue 1122 will hold seminars, roadshows, awareness walk, distribute pamphlets, directly communicate with young motorcyclists and share road safety tips with the drivers and public transport owners.
