Quorum crisis

Published October 22, 2005

LAHORE, Oct 21: A crisis hit the Punjab Assembly again on Friday when Samiullah Khan of the opposition pointed out the lack of quorum, and led his colleagues out of the house.

Though some of the opposition members kept sitting in the house, the counting found the quorum short of the required number. The speakers ordered the ringing of bells for five minutes and sent treasury leaders in search of their colleagues.

Since the scene was enacted just before the house took up ‘The Societies Registration (amendment) Bill, 2005,’ the government had enough members outside the house to ensure success of the bill. They all were hurdled back into the house and they managed to hit the figure of just above 93 — the quorum requirement. —Staff Reporter
