JUI-F regrets attending NSC meeting

Published October 21, 2005

LAHORE, Oct 20: The JUI-F admits that it has got nothing by allowing NWFP chief minister Akram Durrani to attend the National Security Council (NSC) meeting against the MMA stance.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday, JUI-F central leader and MNA Hafiz Husain Ahmad said Durrani had attended the NSC meeting with an anticipation of getting relief for disaster-stricken people of his province.

But, he regretted, he got nothing, strengthening the MMA stance that the NSC was not the proper forum to solve masses’ problems.

The JUI-F has been in favour of attending NSC meetings and has been lobbying within the six-party religious alliance (MMA) to win support of all other components except Jamaat-i-Islami.

Hafiz Husain who is also MMA deputy secretary general demanded that the government should disband the cabinet relief committee and instead set up a parliamentary committee to ensure transparency in relief aid distribution.

He sought that the entire foreign aid should be kept in a single account to minimize chances of its being embezzled.

He criticized Gen Musharraf for announcing a relief package on his own, both for the NWFP and Azad Kashmir, though the latter was an autonomous entity having its own president, prime minister and supreme court.

Eulogizing religious parties’ role in relief activities, he said these parties responded immediately to the plight of affected people while armed forces started reaching the areas three days after the Oct 8 quake.
