GUJRANWALA, Jan 22: Transporters of Naushera Virkan tehsil have gone on a wheeljam strike against imposition of toll tax by the tehsil council.

Buses, wagons, pick-ups and other public vehicles plying on Naushera Virkan-Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Lahore, Faisalabad, Kamoki routes remained off the road on Tuesday.

The tehsil council Nazim, the Naib Nazim and the tehsil municipal officer held talks with transporters, but to no avail as the tehsil council was not ready to withdraw the tax.

When contacted, a spokesman for the Naib Nazim said the district council had not auctioned the contract for parking fee instead tehsil councils auctioned the same.

Meanwhile, the Transport Society Gujranwala announced that they would also join the strike as the Wazirabad tehsil council and the Ghakkhar union council had also imposed the same tax, and the contractor and his men were receiving Rs10 per vehicle per trip which was unjustified.
